Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides to Film in Hawaii

(ComingSoon.net) Governor of Hawaii Linda Lingle
announced today that Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films
will shoot Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on the islands
of Kaua'i and O'ahu this summer:

Governor Linda Lingle today announced that Hawai'i will be the
location for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the fourth
installment of the highly successful Walt Disney Pictures' action
adventure film series from Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

The Walt Disney Company President and CEO Bob Iger met with Governor
Lingle on Friday to share the news that the islands of Kaua'i and
O'ahu will be sites for the production of the feature film, which will
begin shooting this summer and is slated to be released in summer
2011. The production is expected to generate an estimated $85 million
in direct and indirect spending in Hawai'i, providing a needed
economic boost for the state's economy as well as creating hundreds of
jobs for local residents. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger
Tides" will star Johnny Depp, returning to his iconic role of Captain
Jack Sparrow.

The film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Rob
Marshall. The writers are Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and the
executive producers are Mike Stenson, Chad Oman, Barry Waldman,
Elliott, Rossio and John DeLuca. "Disney's long-term commitment to
Hawai'i - from ABC's 'LOST' to the new Disney resort on O'ahu
scheduled to open in 2011, and now the upcoming filming of 'Pirates of
the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' - is a testament to the company's
confidence in our state as a great place to do business," said
Governor Lingle.

"The Walt Disney Company has a great relationship with Hawai'i that
we're looking forward to building upon with the filming of the latest
adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow and his crew," said Iger. "I thank
Governor Lingle and her team for their tremendous support of the
projects Disney has underway in this great state." "We've always
sought out the most extraordinary and exotic locations for the
'Pirates of the Caribbean' films," said producer Jerry Bruckheimer,
"and previously shot briefly on both Maui and Moloka'i for 'Pirates of
the Caribbean: At World's End.' Hawai'i provides an amazing range of
both land and seascapes, and we're delighted to return for 'On
Stranger Tides.'"

The state's Creative Industries Division and the Hawai'i Film Office,
which are housed in the Department of Business, Economic Development
and Tourism, began working with Disney last year and organized a
series of meetings and conference calls to help secure the business.
Georja Skinner, the State's Creative Industries Division administrator
who oversees operations of the Hawai'i Film Office, worked
collaboratively with the Governor's office, Department of Taxation and
Tourism Liaison Marsha Wienert, along with Hawai'i Tourism Authority,
Hawai'i Visitors and Convention Bureau, Kaua'i Visitors Bureau, the
Kaua'i Film Office, the City and County's Honolulu Film Office, The
Resort Group, Ko Olina Resort and Disney Vacation Club to help secure
"Pirates of the Caribbean" for Hawai'i.

"Hawai'i competes on a global basis for productions and to have Disney
choose Hawai'i over other states and countries is a huge win for us,"
said Skinner. "Creative industries are by nature collaborative and
what I think made a difference for us is the combination of our tax
incentive as well as local film, travel and destination industry
support." "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" joins a
growing list of feature film and television productions slated to film
in Hawai'i this year. Warner Bros. feature "Hereafter," directed by
Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon completed filming on Maui last
week. Pre-production is also beginning for the feature film "The
Descendents," starring George Clooney and directed by Academy
AwardR-winning writer/director Alexander Payne. The film is based on
the book by Hawai'i resident Kau'i Hart Hemmings. Several network
pilots, as well as a Japanese drama series and a Korean drama series
are also scouting Hawai'i for projects this year.

VFX Team Talks Building 'Subsiders' for 'Daybreakers'

(latimesblogs.latimes.com) Patrick Kevin Day talked to
Steven Boyle, the creature effects man behind "Daybreakers'" hordes of
vampires, about the inspiration for the mutated Subsiders' appearance.
You can read his previous Scene Stealer interviews and Liesl Bradner's
Wizards of Hollywood series right here.

An Australian billboard showing the physical deterioration of a pretty
young woman over two years of drug abuse inspired "Daybreakers"
creature designer Steven Boyle to give the film's badly mutated
"Subsiders" vampires similar characteristics. "When people see the
Subsiders, I wanted them to feel pity and disgust before they felt
fear," Boyle said. While some of the vampires got away with minimal
makeup, performer Bryan Probets had to wear a full-body foam latex
suit. Everything was covered except for the inside of his ears and the
soles of his feet. But perhaps the most disgusting effect wasn't the
look, but the smell. "The foam latex has a faint sulfur smell," Boyle
said. "And the glues are alcohol-based. So, by the end of the day,
it's a lovely human stew of sulfur, sweat, talcum powder and KY
jelly." Star Ethan Hawke may have been acting disgusted in his
on-screen encounter with the sewer-dwelling Subsider, but we think he
had a lot of real-world experience to draw on.

Lucas Making Early Plans For 3D "Star Wars"

(darkhorizons.com) George Lucas tells Access Hollywood
that with the success of "Avatar", his own "Star Wars" film series
will likely get an upgrade and re-release in 3D.

Asked about "Avatar", he said "I liked it. I make movies like that,
[so], I can appreciate what [James Cameron] went through to do it.
[I'm] happy it's so successful, and worked very well in 3-D. Haven't
been a big fan of 3-D, but that movie definitely improves in (the
field of) 3-D" said Lucas at the HBO Golden Globes party on Sunday.

He admits that they've already been looking at turning his 'Wars'
films into 3D - "We've been looking for years and years and years of
trying to take 'Star Wars' and put it in 3-D. But, [the] technology
hasn't been there. We've been struggling with it, but I think this
will be a new impetus to make that happen."

Bruce Campbell Announces Bruce Vs. Frankenstein

(ShockTillYouDrop.com) Bruce Campbell announced via
an email message to Ain't It Cool News that he'll be reprising his
role as... well, himself for the My Name Is Bruce sequel titled Bruce
Vs. Frankenstein. Here's his official statement:

Hello everyone. Bruce Campbell here. This urgent message is short,
because my keystrokes are monitored and I fear for my life. My partner
at Dark Horse comics, Mike Richardson (normally a very rational and
talented man), threatened to have his foot soldiers "crush my spleen"
if I did what I am about to do. But the fans deserve to know, so with
great trepidation I officially announce Bruce Vs. Frankenstein, the
sequel to My Name is Bruce. Principal photography begins this fall in
Oregon. I'd like to live long enough to see the cameras roll, so
please, for the love of God, do not tell anyone - I can't risk this
announcement getting back to Mike! Thank you.

James Cameron to Shoot Next 3D Underwater Thriller

(monstersandcritics.com) The hottest director in
Hollywood, James Cameron, will make his next film Down Under.

Cameron, who took out the Best Drama and Best Director awards at the
Golden Globes for Avatar, will make an AUD $30million psychological
thriller titled Sanctum.

The movie is already filming at the Warner Roadshow Studios on the
Gold Coast in sun-drenched Queensland and will be 3D - just like
Avatar.

Cameron, who told the Globes his was 'the best job in the world', will
be Sanctum's executive producer, while Alister Grierson, an
Australian, will be its director.

Cameron said: 'I'm actually coming down to the set in a couple of
weeks and I'm going to stay there through the underwater shoot.
Alister Grierson is a really talented director. His first film was
Kokoda. I'd be proud if that was my third film.'

Sanctum tells the story of an underwater cave expedition gone badly
wrong and takes its plot from the real life of Andrew Wight, a
co-producer on Cameron's aquatic documentaries.

'He [Wight] was on an ill-fated expedition in the Nullarbor caves and
a freak storm caused the cave mouth to collapse and he and a bunch of
other people were trapped inside for several days,' the director said.

Paramount is Moving Forward With "G.I. Joe 2"

(ropeofsilicon.com) Paramount is moving forward with a
proposed G.I. Joe 2 as they are bringing in Zombieland writers Rhett
Reese and Paul Wernick to pen the script. Rheese and Wernick were also
recently commissioned to write 20th Century Fox's Deadpool a spin-off
of Ryan Reynold's character from 2009's Wolverine. The Stephen
Sommers-directed G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra made over $300
million worldwide despite plenty of negative reviews.

Digital Domain Names Team

(Canwest News Service) Digital Domain now has a
management team in place at its new Vancouver visual effects studio,
and a second film project lined up.

The studio, which began operating with a small staff in late 2009, has
been working on the filmed-in-Vancouver feature Tron Legacy, a Walt
Disney Pictures movie. It will also begin work on Thor, for Marvel
Studios. The studio has named Troy Brooks as studio manager, Arin
Finger as studio producer, Tim Belsher as pipeline producer and Darren
Poe as digital supervisor. Brooks most recently was co-founder and CEO
of PipelineFX.

Finger's previous projects include the Vancouver-shot Night at the
Museum, and Belsher was computer graphics supervisor for the recent
hit District 9. Poe, a Digital Domain veteran of 13 years, has 2012
among his credits as digital effects supervisor. The Vancouver studio
is now hiring and expects to have 30 employees by Feb. 1, between 40
and 60 by March and 100 people working there by year's end

20 years Of Photoshop

(scobleizer.com) On Friday I had a chance meeting with
John Knoll. He and his brother shipped Adobe Photoshop just about 20
years ago (Adobe, he told me, will be doing an official celebration
next month).

Photoshop is one of the most important pieces of software written so
far in this industry's small history.

What is Knoll doing today? He is an award-winning special effects
designer for Lucasfilms' Industrial Light and Magic. He did some of
the effects you see on Avatar, among many other movies.

Anyway, thanks to Craig Hosoda, who got me a tour of ILM (he worked
there as one of its first computer geeks for several years) and who
introduced me to John. It's my 45th birthday today and this was a real
treat I've been waiting 20 years for.

Enjoy the interview. In it you'll learn that Electronic Arts turned
down Photoshop, and you'll hear many other stories about Photoshop in
its early days.
